Scholarship Essay Tip

Provide detail…

In some cases, as a student, the role you play within your family is more important than any outside activity.  Over the years, I’ve seen many active intelligent students struggle to win scholarship opportunities.  In contrast, there are other

students who don’t have the option to participate in extracurricular activities because they have to care for family members or work to help sustain the family. Many of these students feel like they shouldn’t even apply for scholarships because they’re not “active” enough.

However, if your family responsibilities don’t allow you to participate in additional activities inside or outside of school, then you may have a stronger application than those who are heavily involved. So, when it’s appropriate, provide as much detail regarding the time and effort you invest in caring for your family.  This can be an easy articulated subject to write about and viewed as a very favorable attribute in your next essay.  It’s ok to write about real challenges you’ve had to overcome or continue to work through.
