RESUME AND INTERVIEWING TIPS:

Resumes are written to secure opportunities to be selected!

  • The purpose of your resume and cover letter is to compel the reader to call you in for an interview
  • Be concise (Limit resume to 2 pages)
  • Use the Bullet Format - this format is easy to read and/or eye scan
  • Avoid fancy typefaces/fonts and page layouts
  • Tailor your resume to the available opportunity
  • Highlight important points or words, particularly those contained in the opportunity description
  • Be clear in your writing; do not assume the reviewing officer will know what you mean. Avoid acronyms.
  • Do not include an "objective" at the top of your resume if it is different from the internship or job description

Interviews are opportunities for you to shine!

  • Research the company on the internet and become familiar with some of their current accomplishments and mission related goals that may directly be affected by the internship or position you’re being considered for
  • Prepare a few good questions
  • Dress professionally (neat, clean clothes)
  • Be well groomed (less is more when it comes to make-up.  Perfumes or colognes should be avoided.)
  • Bring several copies of your resume in a folder or portfolio
  • Sit up comfortably and try not to be nervous
  • Stay positive (just be your confident, well spoken self)
  • Listen closely and make eye contact
  • Bring a pen or pencil and take a few notes if needed
  • Send a personal, handwritten “thank you” note to your interviewer
